Mission: JAZZWA exists to promote and develop jazz and improvised music and musicians in all its forms both within the music fraternity and the wider community
JAZZWA is a non-profit organisation which was established in 1994 for the purposes of promoting and developing Western Australian jazz and jazz musicians statewide, nationally and internationally. It receives core funding from the Australia Council and Arts WA in association with the Lotteries Commission. It is managed by a committee of jazz enthusiasts, musicians, educators and promoters and employs a part-time manager to implement and administer its objectives.
Objectives
- To encourage greater appreciation of Jazz in all its styles, past and present without regard to the age, gender or cultural background of the participants
- To increase the profile of WA Jazz performers through the creation of local, national and international performance opportunities.
- To maintain and increase funding for Jazz activities in WA and to improve access to such funding for unincorporated individual artists and groups.
- To assist in the co-ordination of Jazz events in WA and to promote better understanding between all sections of the music industry.
- To encourage the composition and promotion of original WA Jazz works.
Since its inception, the Association has earned an unrivalled reputation for the presentation of quality jazz events, and continues to work to serve artists, local government and the general community as a whole in the pursuit of the above objectives.
JAZZWA's objectives are generally met through a broad range across a broad range of Key Project initiatives:
- Jazz Now! Improvisation Camps and Educational initiatives;
- Jazz Windows 6-concert series in association with WAAPA presenting professional musicians, recent graduates in a concert setting;
- Contemporary Music Project development and presentation of commission projects;
- Explorations Regular Sunday night jam sessions at the Ellington Jazz Club;
- Jazzaziz production of compilation CDs for the promotion of WA jazz;
- Website development promotion of WA and Australian jazz through the JAZZWA website and the National Jazz website www.jazz.org.au;
- Regional Touring development of regional mini-circuits for long-term sustainable regional touring;
- International Development development of opportunities internationally for WA jazz musicians.
